August 17

Lots of steep trail today! My knees and feet hurt all over. The knee pain is normal for these steep climbs but now I also have a blister on my left heel, a patch of skin rubbing off just behind the ball of my left foot and the most serious toejam I have ever experienced on my right foot. My foot has clearly expanded and outgrown my shoe, but there's nothing I can do except finish out the next 2 days. If it becomes unbearable I can cut open the toe box of my shoe. The fact that I'm having so many problems after only 3 weeks of moderate-paced hiking speaks to the tremendous difficulty of this terrain. I can't imagine how some of these young bucks are pushing 30-mile days through this section. We've come only 10 today and have stopped less than 2 miles short of a shelter because my feet hurt too much to tackle another steep mountain today.

We are stealth camped again tonight, only much more stealthily than last night, which turned out to be Grand Central Station. Three separate groups stomped by us, as well as 2 dogs out by themselves (we never saw or heard any owners) who barked at us like they owned the place. Tonight we found a couple flat-ish spots a lot farther off the trail, and when we sat up on the trail to eat dinner, we couldn't even see our tents except that we knew where to look. The only thing that now gives us away is our bright red food bags hung near the trail.

It's hard to believe we have only 2 days left of hiking! We figure another 10 tomorrow and about 9 on Saturday to finish up, plus a mile or two down the side trail to the road. So far this week the weather has been absolutely glorious and I keep praying it holds for 2 more days. If we could ever camp somewhere without so many trees we might have enjoyed the Perseids out here, but we've never had a clear view, or on the nights we were in the open, it was cloudy. It's been my one disappointment, as I know they would have been unbelievable out here, where there is no light pollution.
