Finishing The Long Trail

Illustration and graphic design by Dave Blumenthal. In August, 2006 Samwise and Max decided to finish something they had begun in 2001, The Long Trail in Vermont.

Built by the Green Mountain Club between 1910 and 1930, the Long Trail is the oldest long-distance trail in the United States. The Long Trail follows the main ridge of the Green Mountains from the Massachusetts-Vermont line to the Canadian border as it crosses Vermont's highest peaks. (greenmountainclub.org)

The Long Trail (LT in hiker lingo) runs north and south through the length of Vermont for a total of 270 miles, 100 of which coincide with the Appalachian Trail, beginning at the Massachusetts border. In 2001, both Max and Sam hiked these first 100 miles, then turned east at the junction where the two trails split, heading to New Hampshire and Maine on the AT. Both of us paused at the junction, thinking "where does the Long Trail go?"

This year, we decided to find out. Max re-hiked the first 100 miles during the spring and early summer and we joined up in August for the remainder.
